They say you should never go back but who the hell are “they”? We always missed https://www.port-armor.com/en/ one way or another. Either we were running out of vacation time and had to turn around or we were on a mission to get west and slipped straight over to Roscoff. It also has a big modern marina and that so often means a soulless resort with lines of condos. But I could live here. I’m sure it has a crazy time in August and can be a bit bleak in January but this is Brittany at its best. It’s like it’s not quite awake yet, still wiping the sleep from its eyes and blinking at the sunlight - all day. The houses are just gorgeous, the gardens, roadsides and meadows alive with life and color, town, country and coast just sit so comfortably together. I’m falling in love with Brittany all over again and revisiting the difference between being a tourist and being a sailor with a Celtic heart.

On Thursday we are heading for one of my favourite places Tregiuer. The entrance is enough to keep you awake nights when you look at the chart. Rocky does not begin to describe the pink (yes really) granite lumps that rear out just everywhere.The tides rip in and out across and round in whirlpools and eddies, the first time is cheek clenching or certainly was in the days of dead reckoning and paper charts, but like so many things in life anticipation is worse than reality and, if you get your tide planning right it’s a pussycat and once in the river it is a pure delight. Perhaps my favorite anchorage in the world is here competing with Thailand’s Hongs, Grahams place in Honduras Bay Islands and Bequia for honors. The marina, several miles up the river has so many memories for us - if it disappoints ( which I doubt) you will hear no more - but I suspect you might.
