At last - swinging on the hook.
Our first night swinging on the anchor since we left Florida and it’s a great one. The Channel Islands and northern Brittany are great sailing but not ideal for anchoring. For a start the tides scour the bottom and a nice patch of sand is hard to find. Then again theres the little matter of how much, chain you need to put out. Find a nice spot at low tide in say 5 metres of water and six hours later there’s 15m and in between a healthy current competing with the wind. So if you want to sleep safe and secure that’s an absolute minimum of 75 metres of chain at almost 4kg a metre - 300 kg (660 - lbs). I love anchorages but I also love my boat and sleep. As we go south the tidal range decreases in direct proportion to the increased availability of nice sandy seabeds but we are still putting out well over 35 m of chain which is why, in the absence of a gorilla, the windlass is not a luxury but a necessity on our boat. And it worked - whoopee.
So off to explore Audierne for a spot of Le Lunch
